Whitman County Criminal Court Cases
Whitman County divides criminal cases by court level. Superior Court hears felony charges in Colfax, and the elected Superior Court Clerk keeps those files. Whitman County District Court hears misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors at branches in Colfax and Pullman. A city ordinance matter may instead belong to a municipal court. The caption and court name are therefore as useful as the defendant’s name. They identify the custodian, the right request form, and the office that can certify a judgment.
A court file begins only after a prosecutor files a complaint or information. It can contain charges, pleas, motions, hearings, orders, a verdict or dismissal, and sentence details. An officer’s report and jail booking remain separate agency records. The Prosecuting Attorney files Whitman County charges, but the prosecutor is not a substitute for either court clerk. For a complete result, follow the cause number from the index to the office that maintains the filed case.
Whitman Court Records Split
The county’s two-level system is easy to misread. A felony file is kept at the Superior Court Clerk’s counter in Suite 235 of the Whitman County Courthouse. A misdemeanor file belongs to District Court, which has a Colfax counter in Suite 130 and a Pullman counter on SE Paradise Street. Pullman residents do not have to assume that every limited-jurisdiction request begins in Colfax.
The Whitman County District Court page shows the court’s records route and branch details. Its official view illustrates the local division:
Use the District Court records form for its criminal dockets. The county executive-agency public-record form does not replace a court request, even when both offices sit in the same building.
Searching Whitman County Case Records
Begin with the broad Washington court index when the case level is unclear. Move to Odyssey for a known Whitman County Superior Court felony. Anonymous Odyssey users can view public case information without registration, though document images are controlled by role and court access. Exact names and cause numbers produce the cleanest matches. Soundex can help with spelling, but the portal does not allow Soundex and wildcard searching together.
- Accept the terms at the Washington Courts name search, then look by name, case number, or date route.
- Confirm Whitman County, the court level, filing date, and caption before opening a result.
- For Superior Court, search Odyssey Portal by cause number or party name and narrow the location.
- Read the Register of Actions, charges, hearings, and disposition together. A lone status label lacks context.
- Send the clerk the cause number, party name, and exact document needed. Use District Court’s own form for its cases.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Search | Text | One value | Enter a cause number or party name |
| First, middle, last name | Text | Route-dependent | Names are not case sensitive |
| Sounds Like | Checkbox | No | Soundex cannot be combined with wildcard |
| Case category or type | Filter | No | Choose criminal where available |
| Location or court | Filter | No | Select Whitman Superior Court |
| Date range | Date controls | No | Narrows filings and hearings |
The free state index can locate District, municipal, Superior, or appellate cases, but the court remains the official record source. If a name produces several matches, compare the court, filing date, and case number before requesting a document. A “no result” response can reflect spelling, an older docket, a name change, a restricted file, or a search in the wrong court. It is not a no-record certification.
Whitman Odyssey Court Search
Odyssey is the most direct online route for public Whitman County Superior Court case information. It offers Search Results, Register of Actions, and Hearings views. A result may show the cause number, caption, filing date, parties, public attorney links, charge counts, status, hearing details, judgment events, and financial entries. It is an index and case-information view, not a promise that every pleading can be opened anonymously.
The official Odyssey Portal provides the actual Whitman County felony search interface:
If the portal lists a document title but hides the image, record the cause number and exact title. Ask the Superior Court Clerk for that item and the preferred delivery method. The clerk, not the portal transcription, controls the official Whitman County file.
Note: Anonymous Odyssey access can reveal a public docket while still withholding the document image that explains the event.
Inside a Whitman County Case File
A criminal case file is organized around a cause number and filed counts. Read each count separately because charges may be amended, dismissed, resolved by plea, or tried. The Register of Actions supplies the sequence, while the charging paper, plea form, order, and judgment supply the legal detail. Public views omit restricted matters and protected identifiers. The clerk also controls the official amount of any financial obligation.
| Case Number and Court | Identifies the Whitman County court, location, and specific judicial file. |
|---|---|
| Charging Document | The complaint or information states the counts the prosecutor filed. |
| Register of Actions | Lists filings, hearings, orders, and other docket events by date. |
| Parties and Counsel | Shows public party roles and attorney associations where available. |
| Disposition and Judgment | Records the result of each count and the formal judgment events. |
| Sentence and Financial Entries | Shows public sentence terms and obligations, subject to clerk verification. |
Document titles can appear without an image. When the result matters, request the charging document and the final order or judgment rather than relying only on a docket label. Those items establish what Whitman County prosecutors filed and how the court resolved it. A booking sheet can explain the start of custody, but it cannot replace the filed information or complaint in the court file.
Reading Whitman Court Dockets
The Register of Actions is a dated list, not a narrative. “Arraignment” is the hearing where charges are stated and a plea is entered. “Disposition” means the outcome of a charge or case. A dismissal ends a count without a conviction on that count. A conviction is a judgment of guilt after a plea or trial. These terms should be matched to the linked order or judgment whenever possible.
For another display-only route, JIS-Link is a paid subscription covering District, municipal, and Superior Court information. The official service description shows what that channel provides:
JIS-Link charges by command and does not display court documents. A searcher who needs an order, plea, or certified judgment still must contact the proper Whitman County court.

How a Criminal Case Moves
A local case starts with an officer or detective report. The Whitman County Prosecuting Attorney may decline, request more investigation, or file an information or complaint. A person held in jail receives a preliminary appearance within 72 hours, often on the next court day. Arraignment follows a filed charge, then pretrial work may include omnibus proceedings and motions about statements or evidence.
Case flow: Charges Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
The filed charge can differ from the booking allegation. Later steps may include appeal, District Court probation, or Washington DOC community custody. Dates and outcomes come from the individual docket. The local sequence describes how Whitman County records are made, not how long any one case must last.
Older Whitman Court Case Files
Whitman County’s Clerk retains Superior Court files indefinitely. New filings and many older filings are electronic, while required paper remains in storage. Files more than ten years old are kept in a vault, and the Clerk asks for at least 24 hours’ notice. This is why a blank or incomplete online result should not end a search for an older felony case.
The Superior Court access instructions explain inspection, copies, and older-file handling. Inspection at the Clerk’s counter is free during business hours. A requester can email the party name, cause number if known, and exact record sought, then wait for a cost and delivery quote. A person may also listen to a previously recorded proceeding at the Clerk’s Office. Ask first when the record is old or the needed format is unusual.
Whitman Community Court Records
Whitman County Community Court is a named therapeutic, problem-solving program. Its team includes a judge, program manager, prosecutor, public defender, case managers, and probation officers. Graduation can include dismissal under the program’s terms. The prosecutor also has a narrow pre-charging diversion policy for qualifying first-time minor-in-possession matters when its stated conditions are met.
Neither program makes a one-word docket status self-explanatory. Read the underlying order to learn whether a count was dismissed, what terms applied, and whether all conditions were completed. These local routes are not broad promises that an early case will vanish. They show why Whitman County criminal court cases must be read through the actual orders rather than reduced to the first charge or the latest short status label.
Case Record Access & Restrictions
Washington General Rule 31 governs public access to court records. Court files do not use the county’s ordinary Public Records Act form. Restricted case types, sealed material, full personal identifiers, victim or minor information, and other protected content may be hidden or redacted. A redaction removes protected detail; it does not mean the whole Whitman County case is secret.
GR 15 supplies the court framework for sealing and redaction. A vacated conviction is also different from a sealed file. When a known Whitman County criminal case does not appear, check spelling, the court level, the date, and the possibility of a restricted or vacated record. Then contact the clerk. The statewide index remains useful for finding the court:
The index points toward the official record holder. It does not certify that no case exists, nor does it replace a copy obtained from the Whitman County clerk.
